What does it mean to cover the sins of our fathers? It's best laid out in the story of Moses after the flood.
After the flood and the ark is on land Moses gets drunk on his wine and passes out naked. One son walks in and sees and mocks him for his nakedness to his brothers, But the brothers rather than mock or shame their father deliberately walk backwards to avert their eyes from his nakedness, and cover him. They did not make themselves victims of their fathers sin, nor did they ignore the existence of the sin. They covered their fathers sin, and preserved his honor, and were blessed for it while the other brother was cursed for their mockery.
This is something that can be applied to all levels of sin and father, even forefather, and those that come before you. Do not mock the sin, cover it. Do not ignore the sin, recognize it for what it is, but out of love and honor for the sinner cover that sin. Cover it with what? Well I can only assume the answer is love. Mosses' sons loved their father, it was love that guided their action. They recognized his fault and covered his shame in love. Great things were accomplished by God through Moses. To what degree would you mock the sins of a man such as him? Perhaps to the same degree you would mock any man for their sins. Perhaps to the same degree you would mock your own father.
Give up the victim mentality. Stop using your God given light to illuminate flaws, and instead use it to banish the darkness. Do not wear your grievances like a coat of arms. Instead cover them in love, and walk forward into the adventure of your life. Honor your past by rising above it rather than burying your future under it. Cover the sins of your father see the importance of him, respect him, and do better, and pray your sons do the same for you.
